Monto Colonial Motor Inn

The rooms are clean and fair for an older place. Meals are great value at one reasonable price, with the buffet included, and there’s a friendly country atmosphere.

The meal alone made the night memorable. I’m pretty particular about steak, and this was the best t-bone I’ve ever had. For $35, it was a huge local steak with a bain-marie full of homemade sides: potato bake, broccoli bake, roasted pumpkin, green salad, potato salad and plenty more. One of the best meals I’ve had, and I really do love my food. I’d come to Monto for work, and though someone suggested a local pub for dinner, the bar and restaurant at the Colonial Inn drew me in. Cliff welcomed me at the bar while I waited for the kitchen to open at 6PM. I usually leave bar staff alone when they’re busy, but we had a lovely chat while he poured drinks, cleaned and kept the bar running. Georgie joined us, and the three of us talked like old friends until dinner. Georgie and Cliff clearly put a lot of care into making people comfortable. Staying here felt like being at a close friend’s place after years apart. I’ve spent most of my life in a city, and this was an amazing experience. The way they look after the place will stay with me, and it’s set a standard I doubt I’ll see again for a long time. I hope I can return to this lovely town and stay longer next time. I’ve stayed here several times for work and have had the meals on earlier visits, with no complaints about the food. My main frustration is the shortage of power points. I need to charge my fridge, radios, traffic light batteries, phone and tablet. I’d prefer a ground-floor room because I have so much gear to unload, though I know you can’t always get what you want. I gave service a 3 because reception was unattended.

The beds were comfortable, service was fantastic, and it’s a very quiet area with food close by. They offer room service Monday to Thursday, but we were there Friday night and missed it. There’s a pub within walking distance, though, and the food there was great. A fantastic place to stay.
