Monarch Motel Hotel

We popped in at 6pm for a quiet drink and somehow ended up in the front row for a really entertaining musical. The Grifters on tap were a delight. I never expected to be drinking them during a theatre night, or to see a show of that quality in Moruya! Five stars.

The room was clean, but that was about the only positive. Beetles kept falling through the wall onto one of the beds, and we caught at least six, as well as a cockroach. We could hear insects behind the wall too. We also found beetles in other common areas, so this seems to be a known issue, but it didn’t look like anything was being done. There were several loose spider webs on the walls and ceiling that could easily have been removed and looked ready to fall onto the beds. The mattresses were worn out, and the room smelled old. The space between the sink and toilet was extremely tight and wouldn’t suit a corpulent person. There was no Wi-Fi. We complained through booking.com, and despite their help, even they got no response from the accommodation acknowledging the beetle issue, apologizing, saying they’d review it, or offering any compensation. Leaving the next day also took too long: there was no staff member or key return box. After searching for someone, we called the accommodation repeatedly until a cleaner came to collect the key. With issues 1-4, we wouldn’t have booked this place even if it were free. It was completely overrated and overpriced.

For a little pub to put on a show worthy of Broadway is truly spectacular. We had a great time here in Moruya, with unexpected, excellent entertainment and a stellar cast. We’ll definitely come again.

The people running this place are very pleasant, and it’s a nice enough place. But those cockatoos out front make me feel bad for them in that cage. It looks like hard time in a concrete bunker.
