The Old Mount Gambier Gaol

The gaol itself is a stunning old place, with plenty of history to read about, and there are three kitchens plus lots of little corners to explore. The location is handy for all sorts of things around Mt Gambier, which really is a hidden gem. I can’t believe some of its attractions don’t have World Wonder status! James was wonderful with our dive group and helped whenever we needed it. Big groups can be tricky to manage, so we appreciated his hospitality. Just bring your own soap or body wash.

There’s history all through the place, and the owners were incredibly accommodating. The rooms are old cells, and guests can use the kitchen and other facilities. We were thrilled to find it and stay here for a night or two. The town is lovely too. Highly recommend.

Cell 27 is the one to book if you want the bath and TV room. It was super comfortable, and room 26 would be a perfect extra for a big family. For more of the jail experience, you can book another cell. I wanted a toilet I felt comfortable using, though. I’m a horror freak and loved staying overnight in a jail. It’s creepy, but such a cool, unusual place, and I won’t forget it. I read about the deaths and the lady walking at night beforehand, and ended up sleeping with the lamp on. I was fine until everyone else was asleep and I was by myself. I wish I’d had someone brave enough to walk around with me at night, because I was too scared to go alone and it would have been amazing. The owners were also really helpful during booking. I’ll definitely be back!

The kids loved running around in the gaol exercise yards, and even had a game of basketball with the hoop and ball provided. The gardens were beautiful, and the information signs around the place were a surprisingly welcome touch for a gaol. We got the family backpacker room we expected, with three bunk beds. It was very clean, no cobwebs, and there were extra blankets and towels. The hosts were friendly and ready to help when needed. Everything is close by too. Thanks for the hospitality.
