I was very disappointed by how dirty this hotel was, and wouldn’t recommend it. We paid $277 for two nights, which seemed like a great deal until we saw the room. Getting our heavy luggage up several flights of stairs was hard, and the halls and room stank, with Glen 20 seeming to cover up the smell. The sheets were stained, and the doona underneath had no cover and was marked with stains and gooey black residue. The bathroom seemed to have been mopped and left at that: hair, dust and mould filled the shower and corners. Racks and dispensers were broken, and there were tissues stuck over holes in the bathroom doors. Graffiti sat above the mirror, with cobwebs across the ceiling. The shower sprayed water from its head and pipe connections, soaking the whole bathroom. The toilet paper was already used when we arrived, and the near-empty roll had simply been folded over. It got soggy whenever we showered. The mini fridge was rusty and leaked water even while shut. We didn’t see a front desk or get towels or anyone to make the beds during our three days there. In the morning we saw one cleaner, who spent about 20 minutes in a room, and no sheets being brought in or taken away, so we assumed they weren’t changed. There was no sanitary bin, just one small bin in the room.

We won’t be back. The place felt dirty and unsafe, with no one at reception and drunk, noisy people in the corridors. A cigarette had been stubbed out in the carpet when we arrived, but there was no human contact. The pillows were filthy, lumpy and clumpy, the blinds were dirty, and the main overhead light didn’t work. There was no hairdryer, the ironing board cover was dirty, and the rusty iron leaked water into the cupboard. No compendium, pen, notepad or complimentary biscuits either. There was no soap or shampoo, just a tube of goop meant to work as both.

The room was dusty all over and had cockroaches everywhere. There was no one on the property to manage the noise: guests kept using the fire exit, and the building shook whenever the door opened or shut. People were partying and making noise at midnight. The cleaner didn’t even smile when greeted, and there was no sense of hospitality.

The easy check-in and checkout were a plus, and the location suited what I needed. The rooms were pretty good and cleaner than places I’ve seen nearby, apart from mould on the walls. There was also Chinese food rubbish in the halls, and the stairs were a pain with the injury I’m dealing with. It didn’t feel especially safe and had strong hostel vibes, but I’ve stayed in worse places around the area. I’d come back in a pinch.

I stayed for over a week for a hockey tournament after booking Hanbury Lodge early in the year. I was then called and moved to the tudor lodge, and told it would be like for like. It wasn’t. There were no cooking facilities, just a microwave, and nobody could tell me what facilities the tudor inn actually had. I’d called to ask for a balcony and was told I could have one, but there wasn’t one when I checked in. The place was dirty, with grime at the bottom of the fridge, and I found a cockroach. My check-in email said housekeeping would be provided for stays over seven days. When I ran out of toilet paper, I emailed and was told housekeeping would bring some the next day. It never came, so I had to buy my own. The smell was awful too, and I bought something scented from Woolworth. Such a poor experience. Please don’t book Hanbury Lodge or tudor inn.
