The building has plenty of history and character, and we liked that about Empire Hotel Queenstown. The dinner, though, made the stay really difficult for our family. We were told to find the table with our name ourselves, without being told there were several dining areas, so we wandered around feeling awkward. My husband ordered our meals. A nearby table ordered about 10 minutes later, but someone there got what looked like the same meal as mine before any of ours arrived. Their other meal came around 20 minutes later. Our son was served first, then my husband about 10 minutes after that, while my daughter and I kept waiting. It can get busy, but watching people who arrived later eat while you're still waiting is frustrating, especially with children. When my daughter's meal finally came, it was wrong. We politely explained, but the staff member just repeated that the docket showed that order. We apologised and explained again, with the same response. We had to go back and reorder it, and pay again for the meal she wanted. The staff member seemed quite rude, perhaps overwhelmed, but it was an unpleasant exchange. An hour had passed by then. Her correct meal came out eventually, while mine still hadn't arrived. Someone told me the waiter should have brought it earlier, but it would be another 10 minutes. I asked for a refund and we went back to our room without me eating. After more than an hour with two children, I couldn't accept waiting longer. We'd have left much earlier if there'd been another dinner option nearby. It's a shame the dining experience affected our stay so much. Maybe it was just an off night, but it wasn't a good family experience.

After the steam train ride across the street, we stopped in for lunch. The old hotel is lovely and clearly well looked after, and the place was clean. Staff were kind and service was quick. We ordered a steak sandwich and a chicken Caesar salad. Both were really tasty, just good, classic pub food without any fuss.

Dinner was the standout. The lasagne was easily the best I've had in my 65 years, and the portions were huge. Dessert was pretty good too. The food and service were excellent, and the value was very good. Queenstown's people are wonderful, and I love the town. I'd definitely stay here again. Our room was inside the building, so there was no natural light or fresh air. It could use paint and an update, but it was fine for one night. The bathroom was very modern, and the beds were very comfortable. Free Wi-Fi was a nice extra. Breakfast was continental, with cereal, toast, and two juices. The fruit was a whole apple or pear. It would be a nice improvement to offer fruit salad and yogurt instead.

The first night, dinner was delicious and the staff were friendly, with a good range of drinks. We went back the following evening and ordered the seafood marinara. It was awful, overcooked, with rubbery seafood. At first I thought it was canned spaghetti, so I sent it back. There was no apology, the chef didn't come out, and we weren't given a refund.

The hotel is in a lovely spot in the middle of town, and the old features include an amazing staircase. We booked the dining room for 6:30, but by 6:40 some menu options had already run out. Our meals came around 7:35, and we were still waiting for the extras. While we were eating, staff cleared some plates and said we needed to leave soon so they could set up for breakfast. A little later the waiter gestured that it was time for us to move. We felt rushed through our meal.
