Wheelhouse Apartments

Those huge windows give you a fantastic view, which made it all the more disappointing that the place needs a proper clean and update. After checking past reviews, I saw similar problems had been mentioned as far back as four years earlier. The bed was uncomfortable, and opening the front door was a struggle because it seemed to stick. When we cooked, the frying pan and pot were filthy, the cutlery drawers were very dirty, and the stairs up to the bedroom were dirty too. The downstairs toilet didn’t flush properly and needed constant fixing. The sofa and chairs were old, stained and dirty. The downstairs shower had no door, so water soaked the floor around the toilet, and the windows steamed up badly. It was cold, so we tried the kitchen reverse air conditioning unit, but it was filthy. We took off and cleaned the filters, then wiped oily dust off the top of the unit. We stayed for two nights and were very disappointed. Such a shame, given the views.

Andrea was a lovely host, and The Wheelhouse appartments are right on the river in Strahan. The views are stunning. We had rain, so didn’t get to see the sunset or sunrise, but that didn’t dampen the stay. The apartment was fully equipped, and the coffee machine was a definite win for us. Only small letdown was the bed size. There’s a huge upstairs room where a king bed would easily fit. Highly recommend.

Everything we needed for a few days, with great views. The Gordon River cruise terminal and vintage rail trip are close by, as are shops, pubs, bottle shops and restaurants. The second bedroom was a bit small for an older couple, but we managed.

The views over the water were the best, and the location was fantastic. We liked it so much that we decided to stay another night.
