Peddlars Rest

Everything we needed was supplied, and I was glad to find a communal kitchen when I needed extra milk in the middle of the night. We booked Peddlers Rest for a night while attending a wedding. It was beautifully clean, quiet, and in an excellent location. Recently renovated and modern, too. One of the nicest, best-maintained country rooms we’ve stayed in.

The room was well renovated and stocked, and my husband and I appreciated the initial service during our overnight stay. The walls are thin enough that we could hear muffled conversation nearby. Breakfast was limited, just toast with spreads, tea, coffee, and milk. Still, it was worth it overall.

The staff were friendly and helpful, and it was a comfortable, enjoyable stay. The rooms have been recently renovated and come with ensuites. The walls are a little thin, so we could hear some conversation from other rooms.

I found this a really hard review to write because so much was excellent. The beds were among the best I’ve slept on, the shower was huge with good pressure, and the refurbishment was first class, with well thought-out design and fittings. The shared kitchen had plenty of bread, butter, spreads, milk and assorted cereals. The staff I met were polite, friendly and helpful, and the price was fair for what was provided. But the room had a pungent old sweat smell that didn’t go away even with the windows open. These rooms seem mainly intended for Rail Trail cyclists, and I’ve been a cyclist most of my life, so I know that odour. Also, the toilet and shower clearly hadn’t been cleaned after the previous guests. My wife had to clean dried urine and other stains off the toilet seat. There were used soaps in the shower, a bit of clear plastic, and dirty footprints on the floor. That was a stark contrast with the rest of the room, which was fastidiously clean. Maybe it was an oversight, and I accept that mistakes happen, but getting rid of the smell will take much more intensive cleaning. The carpet looks lovely, but probably isn’t a good choice for rooms used by sweaty cyclists. I mean no offence to the managers, but I have to be honest in my reviews, or what’s the point? That’s why, despite all the good things, I gave two stars.
