Rambutan - Hostel

The pool was a huge hit with our two kids, and sitting there with drinks felt like a proper holiday for us parents. We also loved the fantastic pizza and fresh, tasty salad. Our room was on the small side, as we knew when we booked, but it was thoughtfully laid out and really comfortable. The mattresses and pillows were excellent, so we slept well every night. The stylish interior gave the place a relaxed holiday feel, and the receptionist’s warm greeting made us feel welcome straight away. There’s plenty to do and good food nearby. Parking took a bit of finding at first, then was easy and convenient, and it being included was a big plus. This was one of the highlights of our Queensland travels, and we’d definitely return.

From the hotel, Palmer St is an easy walk over the river, with pubs, restaurants, cafes and the yacht club. The Magnetic Island Ferry and The Strand are also an easy walk around the corner, though The Strand area takes about 15-20 minutes on foot. Flinders St itself, once the main street of T-Ville, has a lot of empty premises now. The Flinders St Wharves bar is just across from the hotel, with Cowboys Leagues Club and Woollies a short walk along the same street. The Museum of Tropic Qld is about 50 metres away. I stayed five nights and found it very good. The pool was a good size and very clean, and everyone on staff was great, including Jan at reception, Jack and Dale in the bar, the room cleaners and Lorenzo in the downstairs bar. The rooms aren’t huge, but they’re certainly adequate.

The food was full of flavour and beautifully presented, and the team accommodated our dietary preferences so we felt looked after. Service was well organised and paced, which helped the evening feel easy from start to finish. The staff were friendly, attentive and professional when we arrived. The place has a lively atmosphere that still feels relaxed, with a nice blend of tropical resort and city energy. We had a lovely night at Rambutan Townsville and will be back. A good choice for a date, special occasion or when you want a little extra.

After a night of heavy rain, we woke to find part of our room flooded. These things happen, and the staff responded quickly, sorted out another room for us and made sure the rest of the stay went well.
