New Hotel Charlemagne

The price was quite good, and the staff were kind and attentive, especially the lady. My room was one of the best I’ve ever had, with a pretty terrace and a view over the roofs of Brussels. The heating worked perfectly, and the bathroom was clean and comfortable, with a huge bathtub.

Sevim at the front desk is always upbeat and welcoming whenever I visit, so a special thanks to her. This is my favourite hotel in Brussels, especially as a solo traveller. It’s easy to reach by train or bus, and you can see all the European institutions from the windows. The rooms are always clean, and breakfast has everything you might need. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

The room was cleaned the next day, but the bathroom soaps still weren’t filled up. They hadn’t been full to begin with. I stayed two nights, and although being near the station was handy, the bedroom was disappointing for a “4 stars hotel.” It didn’t look clean, the carpet seemed dirty, and there was limescale on the shower. The shower thermostat didn’t work properly, and the toilet heater was broken. There was no air con, just a fan, thanks. I’m not sure why I paid so much for an unclean room. If it had been advertised as 2 stars, that would have been fine, but it definitely wasn’t 4 stars.

I paid through Booking for two double rooms, but was given one double and one single when I arrived. Both rooms felt outdated and uncomfortable: the electric heating was loud, the old single glazed windows let heat out, the carpet was stained, and the bathroom was past today’s standards. The receptionist was friendly, though she said she wasn’t responsible for these problems. The hotel manager hasn’t replied to my several attempts to contact him, and Booking couldn’t find a solution with the hotel.
