We moved into Thon Residence Florence in December 2020 for a temporary job and stayed until January 2022, with our family of four in a three-bedroom apartment on the fifth floor. The location worked well for us, close to shopping and tourist sites but far enough from the crowds to reach a corner store easily. Being on a main road also made it convenient for our children’s school bus. There’s no pool or hot tub, which the kids would have liked, though there is a small courtyard for some fresh air. We could use the clean workout room and infrared sauna at the Thon Stephanie, about a five-minute walk down Avenue Louise. They were usually empty when we went, and felt private. The main lobby there also has a restaurant and several meeting rooms. Our apartment had a full kitchen, a roomy living area, three beds, two toilets, a bath, a shower, and plenty of closet space. It came with bedding, dishes, and utensils, and I think there was even a small supply of laundry and dish soap to get us through the first week. The doors between the rooms took some getting used to, but I came to appreciate being able to control the sound and airflow. We had our own washer-dryer, which was handy, though it took longer to dry clothes than I was used to. On the garage level, guests can also use two full-size washers and dryers for free, which helps if you’re in a hurry or washing larger items. Parking in the basement garage is available to rent. The apartment was well insulated, so we rarely heard our neighbours. The only real drawback for us was the lack of air conditioning. Belgium usually doesn’t get very hot, even in summer, so we didn’t need it often, but it would have helped on a few days. We asked for a portable unit and got one the same day. It worked well, but could really only cool one room at a time. The front desk staff were always polite and professional, and went out of their way when we asked for help. Housekeeping came weekly to change the bedding and towels, clean, and take out the trash. We got to know a few of the housekeepers over the year, and they were all kind and great at their jobs. The rooms were in good shape and we rarely had an issue. When something did break, it was dealt with right away. The manager, Michael, gave us his mobile number at check-in so we could message him on WhatsApp, and he always replied quickly. I can only speak for the three-bedroom apartment we had, but it gave our family lots of space. It should work for a week or for a much longer stay, especially if you need room for a larger family.

The cleaning crew were fantastic and went well beyond what I expected, which is why I’m giving a second star. Otherwise, the residence felt run-down when I arrived, with old, musty furniture in the living room. Soon after, the lobby security door broke and I was locked out. They dealt with it by taping the door open for a week. The washer-dryer combo I expected wasn’t there when I moved in, and lately other people have been using my paid parking spot, which has meant more hassle with the front desk.

Thon Bristol Stephanie moved us to an apartment in building C, and it was enormous, around 135 square metres. There were three bedrooms, two bathrooms, two toilets, a fully fitted kitchen with a washer, and a huge living room with separate sitting and dining areas. There’s room for three couples or, say, a family with four kids. The furnishings are simple and practical, and the bedrooms look out onto a quiet back garden. The frustrating part was the lack of power outlets. Apart from those at the kitchen counter, none were higher than 20 cm from the floor, a pain with several phones and laptops. They didn’t provide extension cords.

The apartments are spacious, the furniture was clean, and reception staff were friendly.
