I've stayed at Oude Houtmarkt several times over the years, and it's always felt comfortable and friendly. The location gives you easy access to the centre of Ieper while keeping you away from the noise around the Grote Markt. The prices are better than at less attractive hotels, too.

By the time I reached Ypres, my train was late. I walked across town in the rain after a long day, only to find the B&B door locked, the blinds drawn, and the TV on. Nobody answered when I knocked, and calls went to voicemail. I texted too and got no reply. A few hours later the owner finally got back to me. He wasn't interested in why I was late, seemed unimpressed, and blamed and berated me through several back-and-forth emails. I was left out on the street at 9pm, trying to find somewhere to stay in the rain. I was very unimpressed with him. Anyone choosing this place should call ahead to make sure they won't arrive to a locked door.

David was a great host, and the room was comfortable, clean, and tidy. It was just a two-minute walk from the Menin Gate and the central bars. There was a handy information pack in the room, too. Definitely a great stay.

A quiet, lovely place, only a five-minute walk from the Menin Gate and close to plenty of bars and places to eat. Get there well ahead of the 8pm Last Post, as it gets very busy.

The room was cosy and clean, and I really enjoyed staying here. The host was polite and generous, and I thought the quality was good for the price.
