The apartment has thoughtful extras that made it feel homey, like books, board games, bottled water, spices, tea, and coffee. It’s near the underground station and Vitosh Boulevard, and they arranged an airport transfer on request. We weren’t charged for checking out very early. The downsides: there’s no elevator, and the apartment is on the fifth floor. The Scandinavian-style shower may also be a bit awkward for some people to clean.

Right by Sofia's main street, just 10 steps away, with loads of shops nearby, some open 24/7. The apartment is on the third floor of a fairly dated building, though inside it looks just like the photos. There’s a double bedroom, living room with a sofa bed, kitchenette, mezzanine with another single bed, and a small closet with a toilet. The bathroom has a sink and a shower without a tray. That’s the one awkward bit, since everything gets wet and you need to squeegee the floor afterward. For us Italians, another key drawback was no bidet.

A good option in Sofia if stairs are fine for you. It’s centrally located near the metro, but the apartment is on the third floor and there’s no elevator. Inside, it’s clean and the IKEA furnishings are new and working. There’s air conditioning, TV with RAI 1 and RAI 2, WiFi, and a dishwasher. The bathroom is split into two little rooms, one like a phone booth for the toilet and the other with a sink and shower. Don’t expect a bidet.
