Oberland

Hotel Oberland made a lovely place for a weekend with family and friends. There are several lunch and dinner choices, and the food is made with fresh ingredients and real care.

The restaurant serves a wide range of both national and European dishes, and the food is very good for a reasonable price. Timing makes a big difference, though. When it's packed, especially on national holidays, there aren't enough staff and service becomes very slow. You may wait ages for your dishes, but the food is still worth it.

We spent three nights at Oberland to get a break from the busy pace of La Paz, and it was a great choice for our family of four. The restaurant was superb, with delicious, hearty food at prices I liked, even as someone who usually goes for beer, meat, and potatoes. No wonder so many people come for weekend lunch. The rooms and shared spaces were spotless, and the gardens were beautifully kept. Everyone made us feel safe and comfortable, especially the friendly, attentive staff at reception and in the restaurant. When our five-year-old slipped near the pool and started crying, Walter, the pool attendant, came right over to help and check whether first aid was needed. A great weekend, thanks to the Oberland team.

The room itself was spacious and surprisingly nice, with good bedding and a view over the courtyard and restaurant. I could park my motorbike safely behind the hotel, inside remote controlled gates operated from the desk, when someone was there. The manager was pleasant, and the shop downstairs had basic groceries and very nice staff. The restaurant and bar were reasonably priced, and the BBQ area was fine. Wi-Fi was weak, at 1.8 Mbps down and 0.5 Mbps up. Check-in was a bit rough: nobody spoke English, they wanted cash in USD despite having a card machine, and I had to fill out the guest form before being shown to my room. Checkout was a painful process, even though the hotel was mostly empty. I was tired, did my chores, and fell asleep around 11 pm.
