The meal was decent, which makes the way I was treated even more disappointing. My bill had a small tear that I hadn't noticed. The owner said he wouldn't accept it and insisted that it was my problem. I got the impression he cared only about getting paid. Foreign visitors deserve better care from the owner.

We could visit Tiwanaku and the two museums on our first day, then see Puma Punku the next, without having to rush. The breakfast was good, and we found a great local restaurant for dinner in town. It was just my dad and me, and although neither of us speaks Spanish, the locals treated us well and we had no trouble. Nights are cold, so pack warm pajamas.

Pablo made our stay. He’s the owner’s nephew and was managing the hotel, and he went out of his way to keep us comfortable. There were only two rooms booked in the off season, but when I asked where we could get dinner, he offered to cook for us and asked what time we wanted to eat. We were the only diners, and he still put on music. Breakfast, which came with the room, was delicious. When we were leaving, we asked about getting a taxi to La Paz, and Pablo offered to drive us himself. Really couldn’t have asked for better service. The hotel is very close to Tiwanaku, and I’d recommend a room with a view of the monument. It’s rural Bolivia, so keep the setting in mind when judging the hotel. Pablo also set us up to meet an English-speaking guide at Tiwanaku. Book ahead, since there are only 3 English speakers right now. Thank you, we highly recommend it.

The people working here were really friendly, helpful, and knew their stuff. I liked staying here, especially with the Tiwanaku monument so close by. They also gave me useful advice on the best and most comfortable way to get back.

The archaeological site entrance is only 200 meters away, which is probably why you’re visiting Tiwanaku. My first night here, Pedro mentioned a local astronomer just a few steps from the hotel who gives talks on Andean astronomy and time-keeping. That was a great experience. Pedro and Sandra have been warm, genuine, and responsive hosts, and I’ve felt right at home at Hotel Akapana. The room has what I need: a comfy bed, thick warm blankets, and a private bathroom with a hot shower. There’s no risk of electric shock if you want to take one. I’ve really enjoyed my stay so far and highly recommend Hotel Akapana.
