Hostel Amazonia

For what I paid, it was completely okay. I booked through Booking.com and paid 45R$ for one night. There’s a kitchen, WiFi, two bathrooms, and towels can be rented for 5R$. It’s not the prettiest place, though they do seem to care about sustainability. I was surprised by a mouse in the kitchen, so cleanliness may be an issue.

I wasn’t happy with the service. The private rooms had no windows and no soundproofing, and there were lots of cockroaches. I waited over an hour for a shower because the water wasn’t working in my room. Nobody seemed concerned about checking the problem or fixing it. We weren’t told there was a kitchen until close to checkout; when we asked if we could cook, we were told it would cost 10R each, even though only one of us would be cooking. They first said luggage storage was free if we were leaving that day, then wanted 5R per bag for just a few hours. We left unhappy.

The room was windowless, and there was a lizard sharing it with me. There wasn’t a sheet on the mattress, and the bathroom door wouldn’t close. The toilet clogged very easily. It took 25 flushes and waiting the whole night before it was fixed.

The rooms are very basic, but the price is very low too. Hostel amazonia is a simple budget place close to Belem’s main sights. The staff are very friendly, though they don’t speak English.
