Hotel Pousada do Comendador

Great.

The breakfast at Pousada do Comendador was delicious, generous, and clearly made with care. The rooms were comfortable and well looked after, with good Wi-Fi and air conditioning that made the stay even easier. The owners welcomed us warmly when we arrived and were so attentive that we felt right at home. I’d recommend the place and plan to return.

The owners were very friendly, but the inn didn’t live up to my expectations, especially during the busy season. I paid 2700,00 for three nights for two people over New Year’s, and at that price I expected a lot more. The shower valve leaked onto the bathroom floor whenever we flushed, the room lighting was poor, the ceiling fan barely worked, and the air conditioner was very noisy. The mattress was so thin I could feel the bed base against my back. The Wi-Fi worked in the room for only about an hour during our three days there. When I complained, reception blamed the rain. We were practically without Wi-Fi, and the TV had no signal either. There was just one delivery place suggested for lunch or an evening snack. One day it rained heavily and we had no car, so we tried ordering from the place they recommended, but they couldn’t serve us. I ordered on iFood instead, and the food never arrived after three hours. More delivery options would help guests. The breakfast was decent, but it was the same cake each day, and one day the pão de queijo was too hard to eat. The parking area only fits about five cars. We were told to move our car out in the morning and leave it on the street. Since we paid extra for parking, I didn’t think that was fair. The pool water was so cloudy you couldn’t see a body in it. I wouldn’t return. The off-season price might be reasonable for the room and service, but during high season it was far too much for what we experienced. It wasn’t like the photos. I’ve stayed at better inns for much less.

The location is good, but the place is falling apart, with no upkeep or preparation from the people responsible. Our room was flooded, and part of the ceiling lining was coming down. The pool was dirty, too. At breakfast there was cat hair everywhere, with lots of cats in the dining area and their litter box in the same room, so it always smelled like cat pee. The woman who cooks is very aggressive, so don’t disagree with her.
