Pousada Recanto da Ladeira

The staff were friendly, and the pousada is very close to the historic centre, but the place fell well short of what we expected. The rooms didn't resemble the photos on the pousada's own site, and the furniture seemed untouched since it opened, a long time ago. Our single beds had worn-out mattresses, the parquet floors looked worn, and even though breakfast was around the average Brazilian standard, the old-fashioned crockery made it feel very poor. It gave the impression that the owner had cared about income more than upkeep over the years. The place badly needs a facelift. We've stayed at other pousadas in Praia Grande, Santos, Bertioga and Ubatuba at the same price, and this one wasn't worth what we paid.

The garden was the nicest part for me: lots of birds, medicinal herbs, and a peaceful setting surrounded by nature. It's also within walking distance of Paraty-Rj's historic centre. The rooms are simple and the furniture is old, so there's nothing special about the inn itself. Still, if I were on a tight budget, I'd stay here again.

The views are stunning, and breakfast was delicious. Most of all, Juliano gave us such a warm welcome. He's a great guy, very attentive and ready to help, and made us feel at home. A beautiful pousada.
