The building is quite beautiful and well located, but that’s about the only good thing I can say. We arrived at 11:30pm and the man at the entrance took 45 minutes to check us in. He first tried to charge us three times the amount, then twice the amount, and kept entering the wrong figure on the card reader, always much higher. After a pretty tense argument, E finally got us into the room. One bed hadn’t been made, and they never fixed it or brought clean sheets, so I had to sleep on what looked like a dirty sofa. Breakfast was clearly best avoided. It looked like the food had been left out of the fridge for three days, there was no juice, and there wasn’t much to choose from. Easily the worst hostel I’ve stayed in for ages. Avoid.

Pretty decent, and breakfast was decent too. The street music made Thursday and Friday loud, though Saturday was surprisingly quiet.

You have to appreciate old buildings to like this hostel. The beds and pillows looked old and dirty, and should be newer and cleaner. Otherwise, no complaints. It’s very close to the square where San Joao is celebrated.

The owner was the kindest person I met in all of Brazil. The hostel has good facilities, really cool decor, and a great location. I'd definitely come back.
