Wangchuk hotel Mongar

The views are nice, and it's conveniently close to the centre. Rooms are spacious, the staff are friendly, and the food is good. WiFi works fine as long as too many guests aren't online at once.

The restaurant's Bhutanese set meal was a hit with me since I like spicy food, though my guide found it too hot, even though he ate about a pound of ema datshi each day. Service was slow and hands off, so even when the restaurant was nearly empty, I sometimes had to wait a few minutes for staff to show up. The rooms were warm enough, the beds comfortable but small, and the linens clean. WiFi worked pretty well too. The bathroom floor was the main problem: it drained very poorly, and in the cold, humid weather it was still wet when I checked out after a shower. The location is close to the main town and a little quieter because it's just outside it. Coming back late can be confusing, though, and some angry dogs in the streets may intimidate you if you let them. It was a good hotel in Mongar, but not a great one. It's good enough to recommend, especially since you likely won't have much choice about where to stay in Mongar, though it does have its issues.

The valley view room on the second floor made a big difference. On the ground or first floor, I had to keep the windows shut because of mosquitoes and didn't sleep well. The next day I asked my guide and the front desk for help, and they kindly moved me upstairs and provided mosquito repellent spray. I slept well that night and enjoyed both the evening and morning. The rooms were clean and spacious, and the staff were helpful, cheerful, and smiling. The location has great views of the mountains and town. The food was tasty, especially the local dishes, so ask for those.

The main drawback, apart from the town itself, is the very limited hot water. Keep your shower to just a few minutes. The restaurant looks out over wonderful views and has a good selection of drinks, but the food is rather bland, though chili sauce helps. Wangchuk has the friendliest service and is the best hotel in Mongar. Still, the town is one of the least interesting in Bhutan, so there's little reason to stay longer than a night.
