The traditional setting and Bhutanese cutlery made the meal feel local, and the food was tasty. Our guide had placed the order before we arrived, so it was ready when we got there. I noticed guides seem to regularly recommend this hotel to tourists. The food was good, and I’d recommend it to guests.

The red chilli ezay was the one dish that worked for me. The rest of lunch was a disaster. The Kopi Hoegay, or cabbage salad, was extremely salty, as were the Puta buckwheat noodles and Lom Fry turnip leaves. Bhutanese food isn’t supposed to be that salty, and these dishes were inedible. The Lom Fry was also so oily that every bite left my mouth full of oil. I ordered red rice, Lom Fry, Semchi Datse beans with Datse and chilli, Dolom Kam dried eggplant with red chilli, Kopi Hoegay, and Puta. The setting tries for an authentic feel and the atmosphere was alright, but the meal was the worst I had during 21 days in Bhutan. Even if a guide recommends it and you’re nearby, I’d skip this restaurant. Afterward, the restaurant tried to whitewash the complaints. Making food inedible with heaps of salt isn’t an “authentic experience,” and getting a mouthful of oil with every bite isn’t “rich food.” Anyone who has tried Bhutanese food will know that. I walked in and ordered when the restaurant was nearly empty. They accepted the order without anyone insisting. That has nothing to do with the inedible food we were served after an hour of waiting. We’d waited patiently for an authentic experience, but got anything but. Please don’t explain away inedible food with irrelevant reasons. Avoid this place and try another restaurant in town, such as Folk Heritage Restaurant, so your meal or experience isn’t spoiled.

I really liked the restaurant’s interior. They served traditional Bhutanese food with butter tea, and the server was kind enough to take a group photo for us. The food arrived fairly quickly, probably because my guide called ahead.

They welcomed us with butter tea and toasted rice before bringing out several local dishes. Our favorite was the national dish, Ema Datshi, simply made by briefly cooking chilies with local cheese, no gimmicks. We loved this authentic local restaurant. The food is Bhutanese and hasn’t been adapted to make it more touristy. Strongly recommended if you want a taste of Bhutan.

Dining here felt like a traditional, authentic Bhutanese heritage experience, as the name suggests. We ordered chicken pa, chicken maru, red rice, French fries, ema ema datshi, and phin Nutella. The food was moderately good, but it came cold when we expected at least a hot meal. There was much less curry than rice, and when we asked for more, they refused. We had pre-ordered, but after all the food reached the table nobody was around to take another order, so we had to call several times. It was a good experience for authentic Bhutanese-style dining, though some improvements are needed.
