Hotel Martin

The karaoke outside my window blared until 1am, and I barely slept. There was a dead cockroach beside the bed and what felt like 25,000 mosquitoes for company. I only realized at 11pm that the bed had no sheets beyond an undersheet. The hotel was empty by then, so I had to try to sleep under a bath towel. I was charged 70usd per night for this. Booking.com showed 50usd, but I chose to book directly in person instead of using a third-party platform, and that cost me an extra 20USD. I have no idea why. I paid less to stay at a Marriott in Chetumal the following night. Maybe 70usd to stay in Corozal would make sense if this were the Ritz, but it was beyond a joke for this experience. I don’t often complain about hotels or restaurants, but this was awful. If this were the last hotel on earth, I think I’d rather sleep on the street.

I made two reservations and received confirmation, so I thought everything was arranged. When we arrived, they said there were no rooms for us. I don’t understand how they can overbook without showing that there’s no availability on their website. They said they’d find rooms for us at another hotel. I can’t understand why they’d put people through that kind of inconvenience.

The staff were the best part, really friendly and helpful. I stayed for one night, and the place was fine for what we needed. The room was okay rather than anything special, but the shower was hot and the bed was comfortable.

I stayed April 13 - 16 and found it clean and comfortable, with a lovely view over the bay. It’s in a great spot near restaurants and stores, and the staff were pleasant and honest. I paid cash when I arrived, then the next day they told me the booking company had charged my credit card and refunded the cash. I didn’t have a receipt. There can be noise. I’d been warned, but chose room 6, which has a door onto the balcony. The windows are screened and covered by open metal slats, with no glass. A dog next door barks at all hours, and a nearby bar has karaoke two nights a week. Still, it’s a lovely place with lovely people, a great location, and a good price.
