The kitchen is well stocked, and the staff were friendly, approachable, and always glad to help. Still, my girlfriend and I found our dorm stay uncomfortable and expensive for what we got: $20pp a night including taxes. The dorm was unbearably hot, with just one large fan for everyone. The small fan by the bed barely helped, and staff had no extra fan when I asked. There also wasn’t a comfortable social area, and we often got bitten by bugs while trying to use the common spaces. The decaying sargassum on the beach had a slight egg-like smell. That wasn’t the hostel’s fault, but it affected the atmosphere. My girlfriend overheard cleaners talking about what to put in the shower gel dispenser. They said they’d run out of shower gel but had dishwasher cleaner, and the other person said that would be fine. We didn’t see if they actually used it, but hearing that left us uneasy. The liquid in the showers is labelled hand soap, so it’s unclear what’s being used.

The staff were friendly and accommodating, and I had a really enjoyable first hostel stay at Funky Dodo. The private room was clean, cozy, and spacious, and the bathroom was clean with hot water. Its upper part was open, which made me feel a little unsafe, but having my partner nearby helped. I’d definitely stay again and recommend it to friends.

Roy and Cleavon were so kind and helpful, ready to answer questions about transportation, the jaguar reserve, and more. The hostel is right in the center of town, close to great restaurants and ice cream. Highly recommend! The bunk was comfortable and came with two pillows, a reading lamp, two charging outlets, a privacy curtain, and a large locker. There’s a great kitchen, shower, bathroom, hammocks, common area, and a bookshelf full of good books. Fantastic hostel and great vibes.

I met some great people during my latest stay at The Funky Dodo. The grounds feel relaxed but secure, and they have everything you need. The staff are friendly, and being just 100 yds from the coast is hard to beat. I’ll be back!

I chose this central Hopkins spot to be close to the Garifuna cultural center, and it was very good value. There’s plenty of kitchen space, hammocks, helpful staff, ample bathrooms and showers, solid wifi, and comfortable beds with curtains. They accept (US) Visa payment. Authentic restaurants, food spots, and grocery stores are nearby, and the fans help during the day.
