El Gran Mestizo Resort

The owners and staff helped us a lot with rides to and from Orange Walk. We spent one night at Gran Mestizo and felt like family there. Our cabin was lovely and had all the amenities we needed.

Orlando and Cindy were wonderful hosts during our stay in Orangewalk this week. The staff were friendly, and both the accommodations and the river setting were fantastic. I’d highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

It’s easy to explore from El Gran Mestizo, but the place still has a laid-back feel that made it seem like we were experiencing Belize rather than staying at a big hotel chain. The cabins are cozy, clean, and equipped with what you need, and the pool was a welcome surprise for cooling off in the afternoon. Set along the New River, they’re peaceful too: we woke to birds and the sound of the water, even though town is only a few minutes away. It felt like a little hidden gem on my trip to Orange Walk. I’d recommend El Gran Mestizo if you’re after a relaxing, scenic, and authentic-feeling stay.

Our cabin was clean and comfortable for the family. It was close to the pool, river, and restaurant, yet still felt like our own private space despite sharing the property with others. The setting right on the river was very relaxing, with lots of birds. The kitchen had several pots and pans and everything needed for coffee, which I appreciated, but it wasn’t well stocked for cooking or eating. I’d bring dishes, silverware, and knives if you can. We couldn’t, since we were traveling internationally. The toaster was broken, and the toaster oven’s outlet didn’t work, so we moved it to another outlet and had to balance it precariously on the counter. A longer or larger futon would have made the cabin even better. We’d definitely stay again if we return to the area.
