The room was the highlight: roomy, clean, and nicely kept, with a dock and lake view, plus a balcony with a table and umbrella. There were more outlets than we’ve had anywhere else. The building looks plain from outside, but the guest quarters are a different story. Breakfast came with the stay and was excellent. Dinner was the letdown. Both salads were poor, with way too much dressing on my Caesar, and it would work better in a big bowl than on a flat plate. The garlic bread was the worst we’ve had. Still, it was a great place to stay.

Our family had booked a cottage owned by the Green Highlander Lodge six months ahead, then the reservation was cancelled at the last minute. They blamed us, which was completely bogus and really upsetting. For compensation, they put four of us in a dreadful room that was clearly rarely rented out. The toilet looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in months, dust and cobwebs were everywhere, and it was extremely hot. There were no doors separating the “bedrooms.” It was honestly a nightmare, and still cost $150 a night. Do yourself a favour and stay at the Water's Edge when you’re in Baddeck.

Breakfast at the Yellow Cello Café was included and really tasty. Our two-bedroom suite had a lot of charm, though it was on the small side, and finding room to set down and open our suitcase was a challenge.

The homemade bread was some of the best around, and there was a really varied menu. Our waitress made the afternoon feel especially pleasant. It had been a while since we’d had such a nice experience.

We stayed a few nights and didn’t run into any real problems. The room felt nice and cosy, though the bed was a little soft. Breakfast was great, and the staff were welcoming.
