Best Western Plus Burnaby Hotel

The room felt nice and cozy, but breakfast left me only moderately satisfied. Before my mother could take a plate, I spotted a hair on it. Later, most of the hot food was cool instead of warm or hot, and I found a short black hair in my bacon. I have long dark hair, so it couldn’t have been mine. It wasn’t the worst experience, but it wasn’t great either.

There’s a distinctive three-building layout, with well-maintained, clean rooms that are nicely equipped. Parking is free and plentiful, and local restaurants are within walking distance. We tried Ji Jiang Shanghai and thought it was very good. The hot breakfast was excellent too.

I felt unsafe here and will never book this place again. The elevator smelled of drugs and cigarettes, and the doors’ locks seemed inconsistent and questionable. People and kids ran past our window and banged on it several times, even though we were there for only 30 minutes. We had booked a king room with a full kitchen, but the stove looked like it was from the 1980s, and there was only a mini fridge, without a freezer. The bathtub had large missing chunks, rust where the pieces had come away, and mold all around it. With every room opening outside, it felt more like a motel than a hotel. This wasn’t acceptable even for a two- or three-star place, and I felt unsafe for my family.

The rooms were exceptionally clean, spacious for the price and well presented. The bed was big and comfy, and the decor felt neither dated nor modern. Staff were friendly, there was plenty of parking, and the location was handy for driving into Vancouver. Real Canadian Supermarket and a reasonable number of places to eat are nearby. Breakfast was included, with enough choice for two nice mornings. The gym was clean and tidy, and the laundry room was presentable and worked well. The main issue was temperature and noise. The AC is an internal unit, and its compressor is loud when it starts. There are no windows to let in fresh air, perhaps for security, so depending on the season you could be too hot or too cold, especially if you need silence. Our fridge was loud too, but we didn’t need it and simply switched it off. For what we paid, it was fair value and a great stay. Thanks to the staff!
