We booked rooms at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites South Calgary more than three months ahead for our U9 hockey team’s tournament weekend. Just four days before the stay, the hotel cancelled the reservation. There was no reasonable fix and no accountability, leaving families with young kids scrambling for somewhere to stay during one of Calgary’s busiest weekends, when rooms were scarce and prices had shot up. The kids were meant to spend the weekend with teammates and friends, making memories together. Instead, the trip became a stressful scramble for their parents. It’s hard not to wonder whether the hotel cancelled so it could sell the rooms again at much higher rates than the group price we’d arranged months earlier. Whether that was the reason or not, the timing and apparent lack of concern made it feel that way. The way this was handled showed a shocking lack of professionalism, customer care, and integrity. Group bookings depend on trust and planning, and this hotel showed neither reliability nor basic decency toward young athletes and their families. I won’t stay at a Holiday Inn affiliated hotel again. I’d warn other teams and groups to think carefully before relying on this property.

Cassey stood out for being attentive, kind, and accommodating throughout our stay. Their professionalism and personal warmth made us feel welcome and comfortable, and the whole staff was wonderful. The hotel itself was elegant, clean, and well cared for, with a relaxing atmosphere. Thanks to everyone for the hospitality, especially Cassey. We’d gladly come back.

Our hockey organization booked a large block of rooms months ahead for families coming to Calgary for a children’s tournament. We had agreed on rates of around $300 a night well in advance. Then, days before arrival, several rooms were cancelled. Families were told they could rebook at nearly $480 a night, and those new bookings were suddenly non-refundable, even though the original reservations weren’t made on those terms. The hotel blamed “credit card issues,” but that explanation didn’t seem believable when so many families were affected at the same time. In my experience, reputable hotels contact guests to sort out a genuine card problem before cancelling a reservation. This happened on one of Calgary’s busiest weekends, with major hockey tournaments and Volleyball Nationals filling almost every hotel. Families already had children, travel plans, and tournament commitments to manage, and with very few rooms left, many felt forced to pay the higher rates. The timing makes it difficult not to see this as an attempt to take advantage of demand after bookings had been confirmed for months. Cancelling reservations and then offering those same rooms back at much higher prices showed no integrity or professionalism. Even worse, there was no accountability or meaningful effort to resolve things fairly. I’d strongly caution sports teams, group bookings, and traveling families against relying on this property, especially on busy weekends. The hockey community is small, and we’ll make sure other teams know not to book with any Holiday Inn. I’ll never stay with them personally either.

On my second visit, the room was again spotless, comfortable, and well maintained, with a cozy atmosphere and a bed I slept well in. Housekeeping kept everything in great shape. I also enjoyed the food and range of dishes, and the dining service was consistently good. The facilities and all the care from the staff made for a comfortable, stress-free stay. The consistency is what impressed me most. From arrival through checkout, the staff were friendly, professional, and quick to help. It felt like returning to a place where guests are valued. Holiday Inn delivered the same level of care again, which confirmed why I came back. Thanks to the whole team for another memorable stay. I’d recommend it for comfort, service, and hospitality, and I’m looking forward to coming back.

The free breakfast had lots of choices, including turkey sausage, which I was happy to see. Check-in was easy, and the room was really clean and roomy. I stayed at a different Holiday Inn in Calgary two weeks earlier and had the opposite experience. Very pleased with this stay, 10/10 would recommend.
