Fairview Inn

The woman at the front desk was extremely nice and polite, even as I was leaving. But this was the most disgusting motel I’ve ever stepped into, and I didn’t stay. The first room smelled of cigarettes, and its walls were stained, marked up, and had cobwebs. I looked at a second room for some reason, and it reeked of cannabis with cigarette butts in the bathroom sink. I smoke cannabis myself, and even I found the smell overwhelming. I’d have trouble paying $40 a night, let alone the roughly $90 they were charging.

After eight hours on the road, all we needed was a place to sleep in Cornwall. The front door was locked despite staff being inside, and we had to ring. The attendant's children answered. While my mother-in-law paid, I waited in the car and the kids kept knocking on the windows and staring in. We tried the rooms anyway, but mine smelled dirty, the air conditioning didn't work, the toilet still had stains, its seat was broken, and the towels had hand-sized holes. My mother-in-law's room smelled the same. Her headboard had come off and was leaning against a wall, the sheets had cigarette and other unknown stains, the shower curtain was marked, and the toilet wouldn't flush. We lasted about 15 minutes, got our money back, and left as fast as we could. I wouldn't return or recommend it to anyone.

I wouldn't rent U-haul equipment here. My online pickup was booked for 9am, but the office was locked even though the open sign was on, and nobody picked up the phone. A six-year-old answered the doorbell. When his dad, who seemed to be the owner or manager, came out, he was angry that I'd woken him and yelled that he needed to sleep. He also objected when I kept my distance because of covid. Then he went back to bed and his wife helped me instead. She was pleasant and helpful, so she gets the one star. The truck hadn't been cleaned: there was a dirty face mask and food on the cab floor, and the back was very dirty too. The passenger-side blind spot mirror was broken off, making lane changes and right turns difficult.

We came to Cornwall for the BBQ festival and found every hotel and motel sold out except Fairview Inn, so we took its last room without seeing it first. The credit card machine wouldn't work when we arrived, which meant a trip to get cash. Though it was meant to be non-smoking, the room reeked of cigarettes, and we had no other option that night. We sprayed aerosol just to put up with the smell. The TV didn't work, the window curtains were barely attached, and the shampoo and soap containers had already been used. There was no toilet paper holder, spiders were on the ceiling, and the sheets looked unchanged, so we slept on top of them. We paid $80 for a place that felt worth $30. Stay only if it's your last choice.
