We left and went back to our previous residence to fight our eviction because officers warned us to shorten our stay for safety reasons, there was constant police presence, and we didn't feel our child was safe. The police were involved after more than 14 personal items went missing, not counting the bag. They included nearly new collector hats and clothing worth over $1,000. After several days and repeated demands, only seven items came back, many taken out of their original packaging. I have video evidence of the owner/manager saying guests' belongings are left unattended in hallways without supervision. The motel has refused to take responsibility, so we're pursuing the matter in small claims court. This accommodation was arranged through Alberta Works as an emergency stay, but the conditions were completely inappropriate for a family with a baby. The room smelled strongly, was visibly dirty and poorly maintained, and had visible mold. The microwave and mini fridge were dirty on arrival, and the fridge couldn't keep even juice cold. My first assigned room was unacceptable. One photo shows exposed electrical hazards beside the bathtub where my crawling child was expected to bathe, with a serious risk of electric shock. We also had to ask for batteries because the previous occupants had taken all of them. Staff said this 'happens often,' which says a lot about the lack of oversight and security. There was disruptive and suspicious activity outside our room throughout the stay. People repeatedly flicked their room lights on and off for hours, then suddenly stopped. They looked out windows or gathered in vehicles behind the motel. Our room directly faced the back alley, so we could see this clearly and found it very concerning. On arrival, people who weren't guests were using substances in the stairwell. It took a lot of distress on my part before staff finally removed one individual. Open drug use in common areas is not acceptable, especially with families and babies on site. Alberta Works placing participants in this motel isn't the issue. The concern is housing people struggling with addiction in the same facility as families with infants and young children without suitable supervision or safety measures. This whole experience was distressing, unsafe, and completely unacceptable. I'd strongly caution families, especially those with young children, before considering a stay here.
