For my first hostel stay, this was a fun experience. The staff were kind and helpful, and made sure we understood how everything worked. The place was clean, the room was cozy, and I slept well. The neighborhood may not be the best for walking around at night, but that could be said of Edmonton generally. I felt safe here, with layered door security and staff on site around the clock to keep out people who weren’t supposed to be there.

The hostel was fine overall. You can use the kitchen, and it wasn’t too dirty. I couldn’t plug my plug into the wall outlets, which really bothered me since I’ve never had that problem before. I could still charge my phone with just the cable, so that was okay. It’s near bus stations, so you can get around by bus. Walking downtown would probably take 30 minutes to an hour.

The farmers market is a lovely bonus if you’re there on a Saturday. It’s a bit pricey, but I’d recommend the place if you’re in the area. Everything was super clean, there are lots of facilities, and the staff were helpful and nice.

I’d already booked a room here, but when I arrived I was told they usually can’t check in people whose photo ID has an Edmonton address. I felt pushed to leave and book a different hotel, and I don’t understand why they were trying to send me elsewhere. The whole thing felt very unwelcoming. If I actually lived here, wouldn’t I want to be at home?

The building has interesting architecture and gets plenty of daylight, with spacious rooms and common areas. Being right by vibrant Whyte Ave was great, even in the punishing February weather. The amenities and experience at this HI can feel clinical, but I actually liked that, it made the place distinctive.
