Metterra Hotel on Whyte

The nighttime noise was the main problem for us. On weekends, Whyte Avenue seemed to become a racetrack, with modified Japanese cars, muscle cars, and trucks revving at nearby traffic lights as drivers looped around to show off their vehicles. The hotel windows don’t block much sound. Even with earplugs and a pillow over my head, I felt right beside the action. For a weekend, light sleepers should ask for a room away from Whyte Avenue or stay elsewhere. A weekday stay seems easier to recommend. The staff were welcoming and helpful, the bed was comfortable, and the room was clean enough, though the wall by the light switches and bedside charging block needed more attention. Metterra Hotel on Whyte is stylish and in a lively, trendy spot. We liked the included valet and breakfast room, which was comfortable. Breakfast had fresh coffee, fruit salad, baked goods, toast, bagels, eggs, bacon, potatoes, sausages, and oatmeal. It was quite good, except the croissants were so stale they might as well have been croutons.

We’ve stayed here a lot because the location is so good, but this visit was a letdown. The rooms have become very run down and felt like a cheap motel, which really hurt the stay. Breakfast was good, and the staff and service were good too. Check in went smoothly, but our room was extremely hot. We turned the furnace down, opened the patio door, and told the front desk. They said they’d fix it while we were out. Apparently the fix was leaving our shared patio door open while we were away, which I had to laugh at. To their credit, they moved us to another room right away, no trouble. Parking out front wasn’t available when we arrived. We drove around a few times and paid for parking because there had been no email or clear notice that valet was included. That lack of clarity was frustrating. It’s too bad they aren’t putting money back into maintaining the hotel.

We held a strategic planning retreat here and were impressed. The service was fantastic all weekend, and the staff stayed on top of food service. The boardroom fits 10-12 people easily. Rooms were spacious and gorgeous, and I really didn’t want to leave that bed. Being right on Whyte Ave was great, with restaurants, pubs, and shops close by. Parking is a bit of a challenge, about 1.5 blocks away, but valet makes it easy. I forgot to take pictures, though the website photos are accurate. I’ll definitely stay again.

The customer service really made this stay. We were greeted warmly, and the breakfast staff were so friendly and attentive to every detail that the free breakfast felt like a fancy restaurant. Even the gentleman waiting to clean our room was polite and considerate. The hotel itself is beautiful, with well cared for rooms and a boutique feel. We picked it to be on Whyte Ave and were so glad we did. The staff were super friendly, and after a lovely stay we’ll definitely be back. Thank you!
