Maison de Vébron

I liked having the corner room, and the outdoor fireplace was really nice. Still, the bed wasn’t very comfortable, there was no air conditioning, and we were more than a little disappointed to find the advertised on-site bistro closed. I guess there’s no one on site in summer because it’s a ski resort, so our room keys were left for us in an envelope out back.

Staying here turned into a huge headache, and it was the only bad experience we had during 10 days in Quebec. The other camping places, auberges, and hotels were easy to book and visit. When we arrived for our first booking, the resort was completely empty. It felt like The Shining. There was a note in French with detailed instructions about where to find a key and which wing held our room. It wasn’t simple French, so it would be hard to translate if you hadn’t studied the language, as I did when I was younger. The room was clean, but being alone in a big, dimly lit hotel in the countryside was creepy. We were meant to return four days later, but decided we didn’t want to come back. Nobody was at the hotel to manage reservations, so we called to cancel. We thought it had gone smoothly, then Maison de Vebron charged my Visa 33% more than expected. They keep putting me on hold or asking me to call back instead of refunding me. Booking was a struggle from the start. The online confirmation emails were blank, and the ones they sent after phone calls were blank too. I called many times, waited on hold for over 45 minutes each time, and had trouble getting information when we did reach staff. To be fair, the phone operator spoke very little English and my French is mediocre, though good enough to ask to book a room, confirm it, or cancel it. It may be a fine hotel if you come in the busy season and speak French fluently. But if you want confidence that your reservation is confirmed or any kind of human service, don’t book here.

Tiny and very basic, though clean. There was a wooden chair in the room to sit on.
