Auberge des 3 Canards

I don't usually leave reviews, but I feel I should share what happened. My girlfriend and I went away together recently. The place is nice, though a bit outdated, and the rooms need renovation and better soundproofing. We did enjoy the lovely water view, and the grounds were well maintained. The main reason for my one-star rating is what happened at breakfast. My girlfriend ordered the caramelized apple crepes and asked before ordering whether they had anything besides apples, since that's all the menu description mentioned. The waitress said they were just apples and crepes. The dish arrived with blueberries and strawberries, and my girlfriend is deathly allergic to strawberries. We told the waitress, and she took it back to get a replacement. When it came, my girlfriend carefully checked the crepes and found a piece of strawberry underneath one. We took a photo as evidence. She left the plate untouched for at least ten minutes while the waitress went about her work. We're 100% sure she saw it wasn't being eaten, but she ignored us. Eventually we called her over and showed her the strawberry. She got very defensive and said she'd waited and watched them make the new dish herself, which we find hard to believe. They refunded the uneaten breakfast, since we weren't willing to risk another plate, and didn't charge us for the latte or cappuccino. So two coffees for what could have been a fatal mistake on their part. We complained at the front desk and asked the director to contact us. They assured us he would get in touch when he came in during the week. We were there Friday and Saturday, and I still heard nothing. Later I got a general email asking about our stay. I explained what had happened, and the assistant director was informed and aware of it. They said the staff had been informed and asked whether I still wanted to speak with the director. I said yes again, but still nothing. If you stay here and have allergies, be vigilant. And hope you get more than two coffees if they make a potentially fatal mistake.

The staff were warm and laid-back, and the room facing the water was beautiful. This is a lovely, quaint historic place. There were a few small signs of wear, but nothing bothersome. The beds felt a little too firm for my taste, though that could be good if you need a firm mattress.

The river view is incredible, but the hotel feels old and there's a moldy smell in both the hallway and room. It really needs a renovation. The bathroom was clean, though there was no walk-in shower and the sink had separate hot and cold taps. No USB charging, and the balcony was small for two people. Service was limited. Reception didn't explain that parking was near the room, so I had to drag my suitcase across the whole lawn and up three flights of stairs. I wouldn't stay here again.

We had a pleasant time at the restaurant. The tables are set up for river views, the staff were courteous, and the food was delicious. The sun went down early in fall, so we couldn't fully enjoy the scenery, and many table d'hôte choices came with an extra charge. We stayed two nights in a peaceful spot with a lovely view of the St-Lawrence River. The property felt somewhat dated, though, with a slightly run-down room and a noticeable musty smell in the corridor.
