I didn’t get a chance to really use the patio and deck. There was a sort of sofa outside, but it was covered with a tarp, and the lawn chairs off the main room were very weathered. Inside, the suite had everything I needed, check in was simple and timed well with the ferry, and the stay was okay. It was modestly clean, though the silverware, dishes, pots, and pans looked like university kids had washed them last in lukewarm water without enough soap. The renovation was an okay do it yourself job, and you could tell you were in the basement of the old building. There were some decent updates, but the futon and 80s motel chairs made the furnishings feel like leftovers in my university son’s house with three roommates. I know Sointula is a bit off the beaten path, and I wasn’t expecting the Fairmont, but at $400 a night, the seasonal Fairmont price had me wondering whether I should have gone with the air bnb option. I’d consider staying again, but the price seemed high for the space, season, and condition. Three out of five based on price alone.

We’d driven up late from Vancouver without eating all day. The hotel was lovely, with a beautiful ocean view, and the host AJ was incredibly kind. AJ told us there was leftover turkey soup from Thanksgiving and brought a giant bowl to our room. The soup was so good, and 20 minutes later AJ came back with homemade dessert. Thank you so much, AJ. You’re awesome.

The general manager AJ gave us a warm welcome and suggested things to see around the island. My friend and I spent three nights in the stunning ground level beach suite, which has been beautifully remodelled, with a wall of windows facing the ocean. It was tranquil despite being right next to the ferry terminal. The bed and futon were very comfortable, and the suite had everything we needed. Thanks for a rejuvenating stay.

Once we settled in, the room grew on us. It had lots of towels, a good sized fridge, and crocheted blankets for sitting on the deck and watching the ocean for hours. AJ was friendly and accommodating throughout our three day stay, and we enjoyed getting to know the other people at the hotel through shared stories and camaraderie that’s hard to find these days. We fell in love with Sointula and the oceanfront hotel. It has charm and authentic people, and it was just what our souls needed. We’d needed a last minute place over the August long weekend and stumbled across Malcolm Island and the Oceanfront Hotel. At first, I wasn’t sure what to think of its eclectic, dated look, long term renters, communal kitchen, pub, and makeshift shops. Despite that first impression, the hotel completely exceeded my expectations.

Robin was kind and helpful, and made us feel welcome in a lovely area. We had the pleasure of spending 7 days in the new Beach Suite, with spectacular views and beach access. The spacious unit is beautifully crafted and works well for a couple or small family. We especially loved the in floor heating in the bathroom, roomy kitchen, and all the windows looking straight over the beach. Absolutely recommend staying here. You will not regret it.
