If you’re snowmobiling, I highly recommend avoiding Riotel Matane. My room was decent, but my sled was stolen from the main parking lot during our stay, around halftime of the Super Bowl. I’d parked it in front of the cameras alongside several other sleds. When I reported it, staff said they were sorry, but that it did happen there, and that a Polaris had been stolen from the lot a year earlier. They seemed hesitant to call the police, but did so after I asked several times. The police said snowmobile thefts were a recurring problem, especially involving Polaris, took my statement, and left me with little hope they’d find whoever did it. The video showed someone walking right up to my sled, hot-wiring it, and driving away. They wore a hoodie and seemed to know where the camera was, avoiding facing it directly. It looked like they might have had a spotter or already known the area. There was no doubt which sled they wanted: a newer one parked across from mine had its key left in it, but wasn’t taken. I can only assume that was because it had the 7s display and mine didn’t. This isn’t a good location for snowmobilers. You have to drive through much of town, and there’s nowhere secure to park your sled. Multiple people we met on our trip told us afterward that some kind of active gang or group was stealing snowmobiles in matane. I wouldn’t advise staying here with a sled. If you do, make sure you have plenty of security of your own for your machines.

The room was modern and very clean, including the bathroom, and we had a great stay overall. The restaurant had a lovely atmosphere, a good menu, and a beautiful view. We also really liked the fire pits, with the sound of the waves, crackling wood, and flames to watch. Our only disappointment was the sea view from our room. The AC unit took up much of the already small window and blocked about half the view. It’s a gem of a feature and deserves to be highlighted. When we mentioned our disappointment, the staff handled it very professionally and made sure we felt looked after.

The staff were exceptional, and the restaurant was terrific. I had the best beet salad ever. Our room was quite nice, and the hotel is right on the beach, with access arranged so you could enjoy both the beach and pool. The pool was a little small, but otherwise fine. I wish we could’ve stayed another night just to relax.

The service staff were friendly, smart, and seemed to anticipate what we needed. They went out of their way to make our stay perfect, which I rarely see in a hotel of this kind. The location is outstanding and the restaurant was great. The hotel itself is outdated, and the rooms are on the small side, but all around it’s an excellent property.

The staff were all lovely, which makes it a shame I wouldn’t stay here again. The shower was the worst I’ve ever had in a hotel: the top shower didn’t work, so only the handheld one did. There was no shower door, and the floor flooded no matter what. The bathroom was tiny and the door design was terrible. The carpet felt disgusting even in socks, and was visibly dirty. Dust that must have built up for months fell from the lamps above the beds when I turned them on. The pool was small but okay. The hot tub was only warm, and the sauna was warm rather than hot.
