We're leaving with a little homesickness. The rooms had more than enough space, and breakfast was lovely, with a new surprise each day. At Au Petit Rouge, we got a real sense of hospitality and felt genuinely welcome.

The owner was accommodating, and breakfast was served with a nice touch. It's a lovely little boutique hotel, with clean shared bathrooms. The rooms look just like the photos, and the attractions are a pleasant walk away.

We stayed in two rooms because of availability, and their condition differed a lot. LAURENTIDES was much better than CLOCHER, with its own washroom. But the curtains there were positioned oddly and couldn't fully cover the window, so people in nearby houses could see into the shower at night. Its floor sloped so much that I estimate there was about a 15 cm difference from one end of the washroom to the other. Good luck if you're drunk. The A/C condensation pump above the washroom door was loud when it ran, so bring earplugs. The floor also loudly creaked whenever guests in CLOCHER went to the shared bathroom. CLOCHER and its shared bathroom seemed like afterthoughts, and the B&B overall didn't seem well maintained. The room was less equipped than a one-star motel: no hair dryer or Kleenex, just two electrical outlets, only one beside a bed, and one of the two bedside lamps didn't work. It was much too hot, and there was no way for us to control the temperature. The host wouldn't let us use the wall unit's remote, saying guests often messed up the mode. The tiny shared bathroom had cracked tiles, missing floor grout, a tile sticking up by 2 cm, and what looked like water leaking from the shower. It didn't seem to get cleaned often. The host rarely appeared outside check-in and breakfast. Nobody asked how our rooms were or if we needed anything. We asked for Kleenex and for him to adjust the temperature. He said he would, but didn't. Breakfast was pretty good: each day had a freshly made item such as croissants, crepes, or a fried egg on half a bagel with cheese, plus a smoothie, yogurt with fruit, and self-serve bread and coffee. Service could be slow, and preparing things in advance or cooking in batches might have sped it up. The location was not too bad, about a 12-minute walk from the western wall of the old city. Check your bill before paying. The phone quote, email confirmation, and checkout total were all different.

The room was spacious and very nice, in an old but lovely building. The host went out of his way to help us: when we arrived late the first night, he brought up some great snacks, and on our last morning he started breakfast early because we had to leave to travel. Breakfast each day included good French press coffee, yogurt, fruit, bread, and a main dish. The B&B is conveniently within walking distance of Old Quebec and many restaurants. Definitely recommend it.

Our hosts were helpful and pleasant, and handled the parking situation effectively when nearby streetwork restricted street parking. We stayed in the first-floor suite and didn't see the upper floors. Breakfasts were very good and served at a shared dining room table. The traditional lodging had the feel of what you'd expect in France, with everything we wanted to see and do in the old city within walking distance. Excellent value!
