We loved being away from the busy tourist areas and closer to local life, though you’ll need a car to get around. Try to arrive early so you can unwind on the balcony or by the river. We got there around five minutes after midnight and were lucky they still let us stay. The owners were warm and welcoming, and we’d happily return for the view, the homemade food, and a chat with Paul. Our room had lovely antique decor, a comfortable canopy bed, a river view, and a spa tub. I didn’t love that the tub was in the bedroom without a curtain, so there’s no privacy if you’re travelling with kids. Other rooms have a full bathroom. It’s a beautiful spot by the river, and a great choice if you’re after a homestyle stay and excellent home cooking.

The terrace is peaceful and nicely situated, looking out over the Richelieu River. Our pizza was excellent, oven-baked with fresh ingredients, and you could taste the difference. Service took longer than usual, but the wait paid off. The owner came over to explain our order and clearly cares a lot about his work.

We were very disappointed. The communication was poor, the service was bad, and there was conflict when we expected a completely different experience. It was deplorable to go through. Book somewhere else. Location: Gîte Aux Rêves d'Antan, Saint-Marc-sur-Richelieu, Quebec
