Hôtellerie Jardins de Ville

It’s a grand old hotel with character, and we enjoy that older style. The rooms have been upgraded, are clean, and have very comfortable beds. It’s nice being able to park at ground level right in front of the door, and sit outside to meet other travelers. The restaurants here have unfortunately closed, but other restaurants are within walking distance.

I was happy with my stay and would come back. The room was spacious, the bed comfortable, and it had a hair dryer, iron, fridge, and Keurig machine. The furniture looked dated, but I actually see that as an asset. Some pieces belong in an antique store. I even saw a wardrobe like the one in my room at a pricey boutique in downtown Sherbrooke. I’d been worried after reading the reviews once I’d already booked, but the place was clean and neat when I arrived. The Wi-Fi was good, the water was hot, and there were no bad smells or noise like other reviews mentioned. It’s not new, but I was pleasantly surprised.

I had a condo style room, and it was filthy and run down. The furniture was ripped, stained, and broken, like they’d pulled it from the garbage. Walls and other surfaces were worn and had a film of grime. It smelled humid and of cigarettes. In the hallway, a light fixture was hanging out of the ceiling. The popcorn ceiling was stained in several places and completely open in others. There was a blood spot on the bathtub and another on the living room floor, the dispenser soap was slimy and probably hadn’t been used in years, and the linens were discoloured. I’ve never seen a place like it. I complained when I got home and was told I should have done it sooner, so there was nothing they could do, even though I had photos. They said the hotel was at full capacity, but there were only a few cars in the parking lot. I suspect many rooms have been so neglected they’re uninhabitable, and they keep renting the others until those become unfit too. I’m sure the insurance company would be concerned about the ceiling pieces left open and hanging down. I’ll never return.

The clean, comfortable beds and working AC were the room’s redeeming features. Everything else felt grimy. It smelled like someone had smoked in there, and the tile floor was disgusting, with grout literally black from grime. The toilet was clogged when we arrived. Instead of unclogging it, they handed us the plunger, and after we tried and failed, we had to call the front desk again and ask them to come do it. The curtains didn’t block the light, which matters to me when I’m trying to sleep past sunrise on vacation. Our Airbnb, at half the price, was nicer except for its bed and AC. It felt like they didn’t really care about cleaning the place. I wouldn’t stay again, especially for the price.
