I stayed at the Northern Star Hotel from the 7th to the 8th, and it was the worst hotel experience of my life. The room smelled like smoke even though it was non-smoking, had chunks of hair in the lampshade, and what looked like blood stains on the carpet. I chose the disability room because of my bad back, but after finding a bag of drugs there, they moved me to an upper floor with no elevator. My service dog nearly ate the bag. I was still charged a pet fee, even though I've never paid one elsewhere for a working dog. The lack of cleanliness and professionalism could have put him in danger. When I found the drugs, staff spoke to me as if they were mine. They switched my room and said the police would be called, but nobody seemed to take the matter seriously. I couldn't speak with a manager: they said one wouldn't be there until the next morning, then the next day, after we'd left town. I got no receipt or deposit back. The front desk woman said police would be notified and that I'd be contacted, but they never contacted authorities, as far as I know, or followed up with me. They also wouldn't review camera footage to see who'd been in the room last. Instead, I was told nobody had checked out of it for a couple of days, implying the drugs were mine. Later, the hotel charged my card another $161, but thankfully the card company declined and blocked it. I called and asked for the manager, only to hear he was on holiday. They refused my refund, saying the manager had talked to staff, who said the drugs weren't theirs, so that was that. I was exhausted when I booked on bookings.com and just needed somewhere for the night; it was the cheapest option, though still an outrageous price. I wish I'd checked the Google reviews first. I'm furious about the communication and the manager not calling me, even though he was apparently there the night before leaving on holiday. If a child had found that bag, they could have been seriously hurt or killed. I've stayed in a lot of dives, and this one tops them all. It gives me creepy vibes, like somewhere someone could be taken and murdered. I think it should be shut down.

The evening shift treated us well, but the morning front desk woman was rude and charged us $45 over a drink spilled on a sheet. Then she said she wouldn't charge for the sheet but would charge $100 for extra people in the room, though nobody mentioned that when we checked in. She treated us like crap over minor things that can be washed, and threatened to call the police because she couldn't de-escalate the situation. The bathroom door wouldn't close, and breakfast had old boiled eggs. Definitely the worst service. Morning front desk staff could use customer service training, and we're not staying here again.

Renovations have been going on forever, and only the crappy part of the hotel is open. At check-in, the inflexible staff were terrible. They kept saying “it's policy,” “it's procedure,” or “it's in our system” instead of listening. The fire suppression system was down, with a sign saying fire patrols were in place, though I don't know what that meant. Only four people were staying on my wing, and the other couple I spoke to weren't happy either. My laptop screen was bigger than the TV, and the air conditioner looked like it came from the 1800s. When I asked the nice staff member where to buy pop or whether the bar was open, she was busy on her phone and just pointed instead of answering. The deposit they ask for is ridiculous and takes ages to come back. If you have to stay here, don't pay by credit card; use debit for the $200 deposit and get it back in the morning. Even then they had to inspect my room. They checked all the face loss, mentioned a smudge on one, and after a bit of arguing I got my money back. This place has so much potential, but it's a health and fire code disaster. I won't stay again. Most of the reviews here are true, so I won't go over those.

No hot water, so the showers were freezing. The damage deposit complaints in other reviews are true, too. The rooms were incredibly basic, with thin walls, mismatched furniture, and a mattress that felt salvaged from a roadside motel in the '70s. Cleanliness clearly wasn't a priority, and I didn't feel comfortable touching anything before wiping it down. The experience was disappointing enough that I feel I should warn people: this place is a dump. There are plenty of better options. Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else. One star is generous.

Hands down the worst hotel. There was hair everywhere, and it looked like cleaning meant putting the pillows on the bed and moving on. The staff were no help, and they charged me for a room I refused to stay in.
