The room door was wide open when we returned around 9 pm on our last night, after being out since mid-morning. It seems to have been left that way all day with our belongings inside. Earlier, around 4 am, the locked door had popped open. The bed also creaked loudly whenever we moved, loud enough that I’m sure the office could hear it. The bathroom was already dirty when we arrived for our three-night stay. There was buildup and hair in the tub, a dirty toilet, and hair shavings and soap scum around the sink. I called the office for cleaning supplies so I could handle it myself, but a man came to clean. He scrubbed the tub and toilet, still leaving hair behind, and didn’t touch the sink. Then he suggested the staff may have mistaken the soap scum for stains. No, it just hadn’t been cleaned. On the last night, we found a huge mark that looked like a pee stain on the underside of the comforter when we turned it over. At checkout I showed him pictures and explained what had happened, and he only apologized, without mentioning a discount. First and last time we’ll stay here.

We paid for two nights upfront, but the place wasn’t fit for us to stay, so we left after the first night and got our money back for the second. The owner seemed to have something wrong with him. We weren’t allowed to talk outdoors. Around 9 in the morning, he came to the room demanding that a vehicle be moved. He didn’t knock and wait for an answer, just knocked and quickly opened the door.

The staff member was very friendly, and the location suited us. The room was small and old, but worked for this trip. The bed frame was really noisy; on checking it, we found at least three broken slats, so the springs squeaked and the mattress bent when we moved. At 3 am on our third night, we spotted about eight live bugs of the same kind, resembling cockroach nymphs, crawling on the stove and inside the cupboard. There was also a dead one behind the stove. They darted into hiding when we turned on the lights or used a flashlight. We were horrified that we hadn’t noticed them sooner.

The room at the Shine Motel felt warm and homey, and it had plenty of space and all the amenities I needed, including a kitchen with dining and cooking ware. It had clearly been prepared thoughtfully for me. The room cleaners were considerate too, even washing the kitchen ware I’d used while I was out, though I’d planned to clean it myself. I was in town for the powerlifting nationals, and Shane, the motel manager, was incredibly considerate. He made sure everything was arranged for my trip, from arrival through departure. After we’d gotten to know each other, he even kindly drove me to my designated driver at the airport. The motel is close to town and transportation, and I could walk to most of the places I needed to go. Shine Motel gave me a great welcome and impression of PEI. I’d recommend it to anyone staying on the island. See you at the next Nationals!

The cigarette smell was intense, but honestly that was my only complaint. The beds were comfortable, the rooms clean, the TV was good, and customer service was good too. Definitely has classic motel vibes, and these days it’s worth what you pay.
