Gladstone House

For wedding photos, Gladstone House has lots of indoor spots to work with, from the hallways and stairs to textured walls and unusual corners. That’s a real plus if the weather turns, and the brick architecture brings warmth and depth to ceremony and reception images. Couples and their wedding parties can also get ready and stay in the hotel, so the morning can flow into the ceremony without rushing across the city. For a wedding day with a modern Toronto feel, Gladstone House brings together convenience, style and character. It’s one of the city’s most convenient, character-filled venues, especially from a photographer’s perspective.

The building has charm, the staff were lovely, and the place was cute, stylish and clean. The elevator was a neat feature, and the location was convenient. But street noise carried up from below, and comfort was lacking. There was just one chair and a tiny table mostly taken up by the kettle and mugs, with no fridge. It wasn't ideal for more than a night, though we were only in town for one evening. After going out with friends, we came back hoping to watch some TV before bed. The Samsung TV offered live TV, Netflix and mobile casting, but after wasting a lot of time, we couldn't cast our show or screen mirror from either of our iPhones because of how the network was set up. The atmosphere was great, but I've stayed at much cheaper hotels and had a better experience. I was disappointed by the small basics I usually appreciate, and it wasn't a relaxing stay. The hotel is beautiful, but I was surprised it lacked things even inexpensive places provide. If style and smiles are all you need, this is the place for you.

The staff seemed to enjoy their work, and deserve congratulations for management treating them well. The rooms were spotless, the artwork beautiful, and the food and service phenomenal. It was so much better than a huge chain hotel that doesn't seem to care. We'll definitely come back.

West Queen West is a fantastic Toronto street, and having the 501 streetcar right at the door made getting around easy. We loved the Gladstone's artsy, cool, romantic feel, and the staff were incredibly kind and helpful. The dining options were delicious and worth a visit even if you're not staying there. We spent a week and will definitely return and recommend it. One odd thing was the room layout: the tiny bathroom had only a shower and toilet, while the sink and mirror were in the main room. There were only about five hangers and no drawers, so we had to live out of our suitcase on the floor.
