Outback Lakeside Vacation Homes

The Outback is our go-to spot in the Okanagan, with clear water and secluded places to jump from cliffs. We first came a decade ago, and the forest cabins have become even more relaxing as the vegetation around them has grown. There are so many amenities at the resort that it’s tempting not to leave for the wineries, fresh fruit markets, or nearby beaches. I’m torn about giving it five stars because we’d rather keep this place to ourselves.

At night, the path by RH18, 152 is a hazard. There’s a tree stump in the middle of the walkway and a raised utility access beside it, with no lighting at all. I tripped and got road rash on my leg and hand, and tweaked my side. The photos show how hard it is to see, even with my camera flash. This disregard for safety made me furious. It could have been prevented.

We celebrated a friend’s birthday with a quick getaway and loved the peaceful little pond, ducks and all. After a day at the pool, we used the golf cart pickup, which you can request by text, to get around the huge property. Food is hard to find once you arrive, so stock up on groceries beforehand. Reception hours are short, and the lakeside pool is small with too few umbrellas. Still, we’ll be back, and next time we plan to stay longer.

The lakefront grounds are beautiful, with lovely views and spots to sit and relax. That natural setting was what saved our stay, and our four-year-old didn’t mind splashing in a cold hot tub. My actual experience in the unit and with the facilities was much worse, though. It was dirty and in disrepair, with dirty dishes and floors, plus ripped bath towels. Since each unit is individually owned, the quality seems to depend on the particular owner and how much care they put into the unit and furnishings. Finding amenities was difficult because there were no signs around the property. We struggled to locate the glass elevator, rock tunnel, pools, and garbage facilities. Of the four hot tubs I tried, three were ice cold. Based on the stay itself, I’d give it about one star.
