We were left with no choice but to stay after a storm closed all the roads, and the way we were treated was degrading. The first room was visibly used and unclean: the sheets hadn’t been changed, there were blood stains on the bed, and it smelled strongly of cologne. We asked to move. There was only one staff member on duty, who said that affected her ability to do her job, which makes me wonder why there wasn’t another person working. The second room was in the same state, only worse. There was pubic hair and bugs and bug guts on the bed, hairs on the bathroom towels, and fecal matter in the toilet. The staff member insisted the rooms had been cleaned, got agitated, and said, “well we can’t keep changing rooms”. She wouldn’t let us move again. Maybe another floor, where the same housekeeper hadn’t cleaned, could have worked. Instead, we were forced to sleep in those conditions and then treated as a nuisance and called liars, with no apology or refund. I called her from the room after she left and told her how rude her response was and that the way she spoke to my elderly father was unacceptable. She said they’d normally change rooms, but that wasn’t going to happen. Their cameras should show what she said, even if she tells the manager and owner otherwise. The way this felt racially charged and prejudiced was shameful. We were treated like this because of our ethnicity, and I believe Michelle knows exactly what she said to both of us in the second room and again on the phone. After all that, I expected management to be full of apologies. Instead, we got an email and not even a returned phone call. The email was offensive, addressed to the wrong person, denied any wrongdoing, and told blatant lies to avoid responsibility. They offered zero compensation for the sleepless night. I’m furious and will tell everyone I know. I didn’t think Best Western would tolerate or condone discrimination like this. Disgusting, racist behaviour.
