Northern Lights Resort & SPA

There was plenty to do besides looking for the lights. We visited the animal sanctuary and hot springs, went to Whitehorse, tried dog sledding and kick sledding, walked the beautiful property, and enjoyed great food and meeting new friends. The sauna and massages were fabulous, too. Staff were always around and ready to help with anything. It really feels like a family-run resort. The glass chalet was incredible, letting us watch for the lights from a warm bed. Staff kept us posted on activity, even during dinner one night. When the lights were strong, though, it was still worth heading outdoors. I was worried the trip might feel wasted if we didn’t see the aurora, but we saw them on several days and had a great week. One night was truly spectacular. Just adjust your expectations: the lights may look much better in photos than they do to your eyes, and a lot has to line up between solar activity and weather. The only downside was putting on a few pounds from all the delicious meals and tea-time treats! I definitely recommend this for a Yukon northern lights experience. The landscape was the real standout, with packed trails for walking and the option to snowshoe off trail. We also tried snowmobiling and dog sledding, both a hoot, and highly recommend them if you’ve never done either. My wife and I had a fantastic stay at Northern Lights Resort and Spa, a small luxury resort about 30 minutes from Whitehorse. It has room for 16 guests in private chalets with big windows for watching the aurora from bed, if you like. There’s also a communal fire pit for company, s’mores, and hot chocolate. Bring warm clothes. The owners are on site to make sure you have what you need, and the staff were friendly and attentive. All meals are served in the main chalet, and everything we ate was delicious. The spa has a range of treatments, two saunas, and a small gym. If you’re after a northern Canada adventure with the comforts of a modern resort, this place fits.

The grounds were lovely for a short hike, and our cabin was beautiful. Everything at the resort seemed thoughtfully planned, and the staff were professional, warm, and welcoming. We were lucky to catch the Northern Lights. Four days flew by and we really enjoyed them.

The people were a huge part of what made our four days special. Tobias and Lynn have brought together an incredible team and set a great tone. Mike, Danke Sehr für Alles, you were such a fun guide. Raemi, you’re a healing gift to this earth. James, James and Dongmei, thanks for the creativity and care with our meals. Kaitlyn and Kelly, your smiles, humor, kindness, interest, and attention made every meal a pleasure. Marshall, thanks for keeping us warm by the fire with the Aurora, keeping us safe on the snowmobiles, and making both more fun. Our cabin, the Wild Rose Chalet, was cozy, tasteful, and spacious, with coffee service, a comfortable firm bed, a mud room, a useful hot shower, blackout blinds, and a fire. The lodge itself isn’t large, but works well for the small number of guests. The grounds are amazing, with breathtaking hikes and views, and it’s QUIET. We got one spectacular northern lights night out of four. The other nights had lights too, just not as amazing. The little alarm system worked well, and the bonfire, s’mores, and hot chocolate were just right for more than two hours of very late viewing. The wildlife tour was really good, the hotsprings were nice, and snowmobiling was fun and well managed. After a sauna, the on-site massage was one of the best we’ve had anywhere. Service was relaxed, very friendly, knowledgeable, and personal from airport pickup through the greeting, meals, snacks, and activities. The accommodations were just right. Every meal was excellent, delicious, hearty, and quite local, even if not Michelin star. The wine, cocktails, and other drinks had a surprisingly good range and quality for such an intimate family-run place.
