Kreuz Bern Modern City Hotel

An affordable, solid place right in central Bern, with shops and trains easy to reach. The bathrooms are small, especially the showers, though that seems standard in Bern. Don't expect anything fancy. The pool table is a laugh, but it seems to follow its own laws of physics ;)

The room was modern, clean, and spacious enough, though nothing special. The location was ideal and still pretty quiet at night. Breakfast was the one drawback, it wasn't very good by most standards.

Paolo from the breakfast staff was incredibly polite and helpful, and the location is convenient for walking to attractions like the Zytglogge. Those were the only bright spots for us. We paid €380 per night, and the stay was nowhere near worth that. Our room wasn't ready on time when we arrived. We had to keep asking for updates, and nobody explained the delay or even offered us a glass of water while we waited. The hotel and room also felt far from clean. Every step made the floorboards creak, the air conditioning sounded like a helicopter, and the bathroom sink was clogged and drained very slowly. The pillows were paper-thin, and the crib mattress was so thin we could feel the metal frame underneath. Breakfast had limited choices too. We wouldn't recommend staying here.

The room was small, but the location was good, and one woman at the front desk was very proactive about sorting out problems. My experience with another receptionist was the opposite. The male staff member with light-colored hair gave me the worst service I've encountered in any hotel. From check-in, he didn't greet me or make eye contact, and he looked expressionless. When I asked for help, he was extremely impatient and acted as if I could take it or leave it. It was almost dark, and I was tired and cold, just hoping to get settled quickly so I wouldn't get sick. Instead, he made me feel unwelcome and disrespected. It badly affected how I felt about both the hotel and Bern. I won't recommend the hotel or stay here again. He couldn't manage even basic courtesy. Maybe he doesn't want to do the job anymore, but to me this points to a serious problem with the hotel's staffing and management.
