Hotel Ambassador Brig

The food was high quality, the wine list was good, and the atmosphere was cozy with good service. I spent a night there for a business dinner, and also had breakfast and a business lunch. The rooms were spacious, very clean and fully equipped, with a coffee machine. There's parking, it's in a quiet area, and no minibar hassle. In short, a good example of Swiss quality and excellence in hospitality.

Dogs are welcome, and there is private parking on site. I believe the hotel was historic, with lots of pictures of Brig and trains, and the restaurant is well known in the area. Our spacious room had a mountain view. The breakfast buffet was fine, though it could have had more hot options. We had tasty dinners there on three nights, including Christmas Eve and Christmas. The only downsides were that we didn't get more lotion in the room each day, and there were some very loud noises in the middle of the night and early morning every day of our stay.

The staff were friendly and welcoming, and there is an elevator in the lobby. The breakfast spread was the best part of the food, with lots to choose from, and we enjoyed a spritz at the bar one evening. I stayed four nights on a Vacations by Rail tour, in a single room while my parents had a double room that could be unlocked to connect with mine. Our rooms were clean and sufficient. Some rooms have balconies, but ours didn't. We had a mini fridge with complimentary water, a safe, coffee maker and TV. The group package had set dinners. The soups and desserts were tasty, but the main courses didn't impress, and I would have preferred to eat out for all four nights instead of just one. The beef roast on the last night was overcooked and very dry, even with gravy. The rosti raclette dish was soggy and the raclette cheese wasn't anything special. The shrimp cocktail salad tasted fine, but baby shrimp made it a bit weird.

Brig is surrounded by snowy mountains, even though the town itself isn't right up in them. For our family, staying in town was much more affordable, and we could take the train to Zermatt and beyond. The hotel is a five minute walk from the station and a similarly short walk to the old city center, so it's quiet for sleeping but close to the action. We had spacious, extremely comfortable rooms, and the proprietors were gracious, genuine and kind. A four star hotel at a competitive price, with a five star breakfast.
