Auberge des Grands Bois

The room at Auberge des Grands Bois Buchillon was lovely and very clean. Breakfast was a fresh continental spread, left on a tray outside our door. The attached Italian restaurant was a highlight: we started with bruschetta, then had sea bass, gluten-free lobster pasta, a calzone, and the clam pasta our server recommended. I’m sorry I didn’t photograph the menu to get the dishes’ proper names. We also enjoyed a light rosè from a vineyard just down the road. The food was amazing, and every staff member was friendly and helpful. The service was some of the best I’ve had. I’d love to return soon.

We really enjoyed the hotel room, which was clean and nice, and the breakfast was lovely. The restaurant is my favorite in the region, with kind staff, amazing food, and a nice setting. I especially like the ravioli, though the pizza was great too.

The rooms are spacious, but that’s about the only good thing I can say. They get unbearably hot without air conditioning. Our top-floor bedroom was measured at 38° while it was 29° outside. Since the rooms are right next to the restaurant, leaving a window open wasn’t an option when we needed rest. Cleanliness was also a serious problem. There was mold in the bathroom, hair everywhere when we arrived, and walking around the apartment left our feet black with dirt. I’ve included a photo of the mold, but I’ll spare you one of my feet. When I raised the unbearable heat with reception, they said they weren’t allowed to install air conditioning, even though their staff areas do have it, as shown in the photo. I wouldn’t recommend staying here, especially in warmer weather.

That little home among the country fields is full of charm and so comfortable and classy. We had a delicious dinner, and Kenzie was a thoughtful, warm, intelligent server. Really, stop reading and go visit.
