Hotel Restaurant Wetterhorn

Getting to the restaurant on foot wasn't easy, so a car or bus is more convenient. The food was fairly average and seemed aimed more at local tastes than an international palate. Service was disappointing too: the staff were rude and unaccommodating at first, then got more polite after we said we would leave a review.

The shared bathrooms were spacious and very clean, and the WiFi was fast enough for streaming and email, unlike other hotel connections I'd used on this trip. Breakfast started at 7:15, earlier than the 8am starts I'd seen elsewhere. It was basic but had a good selection and freshly made coffee. There was free tea and coffee all day, with lots of teas, plus a communal fridge, kettle, and microwave. I also liked the large outdoor terrace, separate from the restaurant. I stayed two nights in a mixed dorm, which I wouldn't usually pick but was a last resort. Check-in was friendly and I could get in early, while checkout was quick and smooth. The usual dorm issues came up: loud snoring, people slamming doors and switching on lights late at night. That's down to the guests looking for a cheaper night, not the property. There were only two outlets for eight people, so we were competing for them. A power strip could help, and there were a few sockets in shared areas. The dorm had open luggage cubbies with no way to lock them, though I felt fine leaving my things during the day. The room was okay by day but unbearably hot at night, even with the windows open. I was told I might have arrived during a heat wave. A free bus pass for travel between the hotel and the centre is given on arrival, though the driver hardly checks if you forget it. Buses come every 30 minutes, but the last one back uphill is around 6:30pm. That affected my plans for full-day hikes, since I didn't want to walk more than an hour uphill from the train or bus station.

We came for dinner and the fondue was delicious, definitely worth trying. Our waitress was from the Czech Republic and was very friendly and polite. I can't remember her name, but she left us with a lovely impression of the place.

The food was good, and the scenery and view around the area were wonderful when I visited on 11 May. Service was poor, though. We waited around 15 minutes after sitting down, and the Cola I asked for during the meal never arrived. The waiters weren't very friendly.
