The history of the house is everywhere, from the books and signs about the family to the old office and watchmakers’ workspaces on display. It was the former home and workshop of the DuBois family, who founded Switzerland’s first watchmaking workshop. The hotel sits in central Le Locle, about a five-minute walk from the train station. It’s a lovely historic boutique place, with nicely furnished rooms and modern bathrooms. There’s a shared kitchen and dining area on the second floor, set across two historic rooms. We stayed Sunday to Monday, when the breakfast cafe was closed. Instead, a basket of bread, jam, yoghurt, and fruit was left in the kitchen for us to serve ourselves. We had a lovely stay and would recommend it.

The building is around 300 years old and kept close to its original state, so comfort is limited. There’s no elevator, and the church tower just outside rings loudly every 15 minutes all night. Still, I gave it five stars for the historical experience. We stayed in the connecting “Safari” and “Locloise” rooms with our two teenage kids, and had our own bath. The design was tasteful, with lots of small details, even the breakfast-hour signs placed just right. It felt straight out of a lifestyle magazine. We could make dinner in the kitchen and eat it in the historic salon. Breakfast, served in the old watchmaker’s workshop, was lovingly prepared, with fresh pancakes and delicious fruit yogurt. Owner Céline gave first-class service, and we could check out late. I would’ve liked croissants like the website showed and better orange juice, but that’s nitpicking.

A seven-generation watch factory in a building older than Australia. Worth seeing.

An intriguing collection of rooms in an old print shop, with hidden things to discover all over the place.

One of the best places to eat in Le Locle.
