We loved listening to the nearby creek and the livestock bells from our balcony room at the back of the building, so pleasant that we kept the window open the whole time. The bathroom and shower were nice too. Breakfast was great, especially the coffee, and the appenzeller-burger hit the spot after a long hike. All the staff were friendly and accommodating. Our two-night stay was the highlight of our trip, and we hope to return someday!

The staff were so welcoming and wonderful, and they were a big reason I enjoyed my stay as much as I did. Such a beautiful hotel, and perfectly placed for hikes around appenzell.

The prices are very reasonable, which is a nice bonus. The food is delicious and the service is good. A great location whether you're setting off for a hike or just getting back from one.

After hiking to the waterfalls, we stopped at Alpenrose for a meal. Its location is handy since there aren't many nearby restaurants, and without it we might have gone hungry. The old hotel and restaurant are well maintained and very clean, which was a plus. The service was average, with some limitations. They wouldn't accommodate basic requests, such as swapping a side for one of the main dishes. The food looked appealing, and the star-shaped butter on the meat added a distinctive flavor. But the vegetables and potatoes were bland and underseasoned. With mains averaging 28 CHF, the value felt disappointing. The staff played with their children in the dining room. It gave the place a personal touch, but the noise was disruptive and would have been better suited to another area of the hotel. The dining space also had poor ventilation, so a strong kitchen smell lingered throughout.

We had a great three-night stay. The room was spacious and had all the facilities we needed. It’s a nice hotel with a great view and friendly staff, close to the train station and lots of hiking trails. The restaurant is very good too.
