Hotel Holiday

The room and breakfast were quite nice, better than we expected, but the service was a mess and I can't recommend staying here. We left our luggage after checking out Sunday morning, since we wouldn't leave Thun until evening, and staff agreed to store it. When we returned at 17:10, the hotel was closed. Reception shuts in mid-afternoon, with no staff anywhere until Monday morning, and nobody told us this when we dropped off our bags. Their booking message said reception was available 24 hours, but calls went unanswered. The door listed an emergency number beginning +971, not a Swiss number. We eventually reached someone on that line, who said reception was closed and we had to come back THE NEXT DAY for our luggage. We don't live in Thun and needed to go home. After more back and forth and threatening to call police, they finally sent a manager over, let us in, and gave us the bags. It took more than an hour. Meanwhile, several other groups were trying to self check in with codes that didn't work, all struggling to reach the absent staff. It wasn't just us. Looking back, I see other reviews describing similar problems. The hotel itself is good, but service has fallen terribly. Apparently it's been bought by a Middle Eastern investment group, which would explain the emergency number and the hotel now being alcohol free. I had thought they were being health conscious, but it seems to be a religious thing. You may get lucky and have everything go smoothly, but if anything goes wrong, good luck.

Everything was great for the price. The reception desk could use a bit of paint, but the room was modern and clean, the staff were very friendly, breakfast was good, and the hotel is right by the lake.

The staff made us feel welcome as soon as we arrived, and the lakeside scenery around Hotel Restaurant Holiday Thun is beautiful. Our room was clean and comfortable, and the hotel is well maintained. We had a lovely, relaxing stay and would happily recommend it as a way to enjoy Thun and the surrounding area.

The hotel's best feature is how close it is to the lake. Beyond that, I wouldn't recommend staying here. The mattresses were awful, and there is no air conditioning, so I couldn't sleep in the hot room. The towel warmer couldn't be switched off and added more heat. Ask for a fan if you stay, since they do have some available. Breakfast was mediocre, and the hotel sits beside a fairly busy roundabout. Alcohol and pork aren't served here.
